This custom bass started life as some scraps of antique heartpine lumber which had been reclaimed from a railroad boxcar. If you are not familiar with old-growth heart pine, don't feel bad, I wasn't either, and I've been messin' around with wood for 25 years. It's Southern Long Leaf pine that grew 200 or more years ago here in the south in forests which had never been cut. Sunlight and water were at a premium due to the density of the forest which caused the trees to grow real slooooooow. I have a scrap from this bass with 20 growth rings per inch! This pine has a rich, heady aroma and is nearly as strong a white oak. Is that cool or what?

When our adventurous customer delivered the wood it looked like charcoal covered in dirt and oil, and frankly, I didn't want to run it through my planer. Our customer also provided a vintage '77 Fender fretless neck, all maple. I have a series of photos of the construction of this bass which I'll post in due time, but to make a long story, we'll you know, not long, it turned out great and our customer loves it. A friend of his played it and said it was the best bass he ever played! (I hope it wasn't the only bass he ever played....)

So I'm posting this bass as an item, even though it's a one-off and NOT for sale. Why, you ask?, Well, I have a small stash of Antique Heart Pine now and we are geared up to build a few more. We have a Tele' shape body, a P bass and enough wood for about 10 guitars. So if you are interested, let us know.

For this bass, we used all black hardware and a P-J pickup config, and no pickguard (we didn't want to cover any wood), and a Strat' style output jack. Finish is a satin wiping vanish (Waterlox brand over amber shellac)

Hardware used - Hipshot bridge which allows string loading from top and through the body - (we installed the string ferrules on the back for through-body). Schaller vintage style tuners, Schaller strap locks, CTS pots, Allparts distributed knobs, and 1 Allparts Jazz bass pickup along with Seymour Duncan basslines P-bass pickups in the front. The customer wanted a top accessible output jack instead of the side jack, so we used a standard strat-style jackplate with a switchcraft jack.
